Bratislava?

Ellie Harold / Comment on this

Yup, I learned earlier this week that Bratislava, Slovakia is the next horizon upon which my art will land.

Bratislava? Really? I'm intrigued! I can't remember exactly when I registered for the Art In Embassies program that places the work of American artists in U.S. embassies around the world—it's likely to have been 10 years or more. So, just as mom might have predicted, patience pays off... eventually. The timing, however, is very interesting. And the pieces the curator has requested are even more so.

Anyone who's followed my work since the 2016 presidential election knows myriad birds have flown into, around and through my heart, soul and canvas; and, 3 of the 4 paintings the State Department has requested are from the series, Birds Fly In. In fact, 2 of these migration-inspired, avian-themed works are very recent, painted less than a month ago in San Miguel de Allende, MX. Who woulda thunk any part of the current U.S. government would want anything to do with this sort of metaphorical art? And, yet ....

Such is the kind of unexpected outcome I've come to expect from my Birds Fly In artwork. These paintings have been the catalyst for my most ambitious project to date—the BIRDS FLY IN: A Human Refuge installation that will launch at the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort, MI on August 7, 2020. Through this project, I've made art I never dreamed of making and remarkable connections with people I might otherwise have never known. So, should I be surprised that pieces from the project will soon wing their way to a country that was once caged behind the Iron Curtain? Well, as I said, I'm intrigued.

As has been the case for the past three years, my art informs me once again that there is more to the Big Picture than meets the eye: Patience, not panic, are in order. Meaning not meanness will rule the day. Resisting the temptation to get too negative about current events, I step to the easel to see what the next painting wants to be—almost always, those intuitive birds fly in.

Thanks for celebrating with me their arrivals and departures, beyond walls, over bridges!

Bratislava? Yes ....!

A Satisfying Puzzle

Ellie Harold / 1 Comment

For as long as I remember, I've enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. From an early age I delighted in watching an image emerge from a mess of disparate pieces.  Inevitably, there were moments of frustration. After searching fruitlessly for a certain piece, I'd be convinced it must have fallen from the box, or never been included in the first place. But, then, having moved on to another area of the puzzle, I'd find the piece I was sure had gone missing forever. (So much like life!)

Maybe mom always bought me puzzles for Christmas because she wanted to teach me patience. If so, it worked. Even as a cool teenager I'd stay up way past Johnny Carson to see the Big Picture emerge. (I'm still quite pleased with Big Pictures, in case you hadn't noticed!)

Anyway, I've always kept an eye out for a way to turn my paintings into puzzles. I've learned, however, that jigsaw puzzles are not cheap to manufacture.  A good puzzle maker creates pieces that are almost but not quite the same, an intricate process. When I recently found an affordable way to turn a favorite painting of Crystal Lake into a jigsaw, I immediately ordered the 6" x 8" puzzle.

When it arrived, however, I was a bit disappointed. The puzzle looked small and didn't all the pieces appear to be the same? I thought of returning it to the manufacturer. Before doing that, however, I decided to work the puzzle. Darned if it wasn't deceptively challenging! I didn't stay up all night to complete it, but even I, the artist, did have to concentrate to get it done in under 30 minutes. This puzzle has definitely been created with today's attention span in mind! Just enough frustration to make for a satisfying resolution.

So, it's with great pride I offer you this modest (and pretty) puzzle for you or a loved one to give or receive this Holiday Season! I actually have puzzles with two images available, both are 6" x 8" (48 pieces). For lovers of all things Crystal Lake, Sleeping Bear Dunes or simply UpNorth, these puzzles are bound to give pleasure for as long as today's limited attention allow.

This Christmas, let your patience be tested and then satisfied with a visual meditation on well-loved, beautiful subjects!
